News media have a history as long as the existence of the United States. While the reporting of crimes began as brief, straightforward accounts, increases in technology and increased use of new media have caused an evolution in the way in which news media now report. Broadcasting videos related to crime recorded by bystanders has raised concerns about privacy; yet at the same time, it has also increased awareness of police misdoings, creating a greater desire for enhanced public surveillance in some instances.
