Smartphones are mobile devices featuring an operating system (OS) with telecommunication capabilities. Since the introduction of the Apple iPhone in 2007, smartphones have been sold worldwide, replacing most noncomputerized mobile phones. Comparable with mobile computers such as tablets, smartphones are often used as personal digital assistants. Storing a variety of personal and real-time data, they have also become objects of targeted surveillance by national security and law enforcement agencies as well as by private commercial actors.
