West Virginia does not create an environment that is particularly supportive of stem cell research because of controversies surrounding the abortion issue. West Virginia political opinions are also influenced by the conservative atmosphere of the neighboring state of Virginia. The West Virginia legislature has passed no legislation either supporting or restricting the use of human embryonic stem cells in research; nor has the state specifically banned therapeutic cloning. The largest research institution in the state is West Virginia University (WVU), which was founded in 1867 as the Agricultural College of West Virginia. It was renamed West Virginia University in 1868. Stem cell research related to developing anticancer treatments is carried out within the School of Medicine.
