University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris

The Pierre and Marie Curie University (UPMC) location in the fifth arrondissement in the Latin Quarter of Paris, France, has been the site of an educational institution for nine centuries, when the Saint Victor Abbey held clerical training on the grounds. A broader school was founded there by Guillaume de Champeux in 1109, and in 1959 the school was revitalized as the Faculty of Science of the University of Paris (Sorbonne), headed by Andrea Malroux. The UPMC itself was officially established in 1971, after the Sorbonne divided and the Faculty of Science was renamed for the Curies.
