The story of stem cells in Texas is best characterized by the case of CellTex Therapeutics, a for-profit venture. Texas has a history of resisting the federal government, and CellTex was attractive to desperate patients as well as the religious and political right that objected to both big government and embryonic stem cell research. Adult stem cells are less controversial than embryonic stem cells because their use does not entail destroying an embryo. Critics contend, however, that CellTex and its kind hamper research into valid stem cell treatments.
