Taiwan is officially known as the Republic of China and consists of the island of Taiwan and a number of smaller islands. Its government claims sovereignty over all of China, including mainland China, which is also known as the People’s Republic of China and which has been controlled by the Communist Party of China since 1949. Though Taiwan ceased officially to pursue control over mainland China in 1992, it still denies the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China and declares itself the sole legal representative of the Chinese people. For this reason, most of the world does not maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
