Stowers Institute for Medical Research

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research, a biomedical research organization and research center, was established in 1994 by James E. Stowers, Jr., and Virginia G. Stowers in Kansas City, Missouri. According to the institute’s website, its mission is “to make a significant contribution to humanity through medical research by expanding our understanding of the secrets of life, and by improving life’s quality through innovative approaches to the causes, treatment and prevention of diseases.” The institute houses twenty research and three technology development programs and has about 550 Institute members, of whom 370 are scientific staff. Richard Brown is the chairman of the board of directors, David Chao is the president and chief executive officer, and Robert Krumlauf is the scientific director.
