Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute

The Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (the Burnham Institute) is a nonprofit public benefit corporation operating in La Jolla, California (a neighborhood of San Diego), and the Lake Nona region in Orlando, Florida. The mission of the Burnham Institute is to discover the fundamental molecular causes of disease and to devise innovative therapies, using a collaborative approach to medical research.

Background

The Burnham Institute has been a leader in stem cell research and training for over a decade. In 2001, the Burnham Institute founded its Stem Cell Research Center and Stem Cells and Regenerative Biology Program, and in 2006 the Burnham Institute was awarded $3 million by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for hESC research, infrastructure, and training.
