Adult stem cells have the potential to generate cures and therapies for cancer, stroke, heart attack, lung disease, and many more debilitating and fatal illnesses. Oklahoma is represented in the U.S. Senate by Tom Coburn, M.D., whose website has a statement that stem cell research has delivered absolutely no cures or treatments after 30 years of research on animal stem cells, almost a decade of work on human embryonic stem cells, and $100 million in federal funding. No human clinical trials or therapies exist that use embryonic stem cells. On the other hand, adult and cord blood stem cells provide over 70 treatments and therapies, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is funding 330 human clinical trials using these cells.
