Despite frequently being identified as the most progressive of the southern states, North Carolina is conservative on issues such as abortion. Opposition to abortion does not always translate into opposition to stem cell research in this research-oriented state, but it does make the issue controversial.

While North Carolina does not provide state funds to support stem cell research, officials have created a committee to study the role of stem cell research within the state.
