Montana has been affected by federal laws and, over the years, it has proposed and enacted several pieces of legislature within the state concerning the use of stem cell research. Ongoing legislation continues to direct the course of research in Montana. Montana State University (MSU) is integrally involved in biotechnical research and the use of stem cell research to further biomedical science. MSU’s research enterprise is headed by Renee Reijo Pera, who is recognized internationally as an expert in the field of stem cell research. Great Falls, Montana, is home to the McLaughlin Research Institute (MRI), which uses genetic models and stem cell research to investigate neurodegenerative disorders.
