Various liver pathologies lead to such irreparable liver damage that the body itself is not able to regenerate the lost liver cells or to restore liver function. After many decades without a cure for permanent liver damage, liver transplant was viewed as the ultimate treatment, but now, with the advent of stem cell therapy, embryonal, fetal, and hematopoietic stem cells along with pluripotent stem cells and even adult cells after proper induction can be used as a long term cure.
