Leukemia and Lymphoma Cancer Stem Cells

Leukemia and lymphoma cancer stem cells (CSCs) are rare cell populations in leukemia and lymphoma. Several lines of evidence suggest that CSCs are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into various types of cancer cells. Aberrant regulation of gene expression and some signaling pathways are noticeable in CSCs compared to other tumor cells. CSCs are hypothesized to be responsible for cancer initiation, progression, metastasis, recurrence, and drug resistance. Therefore, given the potential key role of CSCs in the pathogenesis, recurrence, and treatment of cancers, the leukemia and lymphoma CSCs deserve particular attention to improve our understanding of biology and the development of new therapeutic avenues.
