Stem cell therapy aims to treat hearing loss characterized by inner ear damage to sensory neurons and hair cells residing in the organ of Corti. Because of their ability to differentiate into various types of cells, stem cells may play an important role in the future treatment of damage widely regarded as permanent. Regained function in human trials has been close to nonexistent, but promising results with animal subjects and a rapid increase of knowledge in the subject supports the belief that clinical treatment may be available in the near future.
