The French Republic is a European country that is one of the only countries with coasts on both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The largest country in the European Union by area, it is also the second-most populous. Though its current constitution was adopted in 1958, it includes the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, one of the earliest human rights treatises to be adopted as law.
