Direct Reprogramming of Adult Cells Into Other Cell Types

Direct reprogramming refers to the change in genetic and phenotypic makeup of a fully functional adult cell into a cell of another kind without undergoing an unstable state of pleuripotency, where cells can differentiate into all types of cells. Ongoing research reveals that reprogramming can be done through various ways, each having its benefits and barriers. Direct reprogramming is a relatively new technique in regenerative medicine and offers encouraging results with fewer limitations. Extensive work is being carried out to generate cells that may help replenish those cells that have been damaged from disease, injury, degeneration, or aging. These newly reprogrammed cells can also offer detailed insight in investigating effects of new drugs, provide patient-matched lineages for diseased cells, or help in stem cell transplants.
