Stem cells are the primitive origin cells that possess the ability to regenerate into stem cells or specialized cells such as blood cells or nerves. Due to these properties, stem cells are being considered in regenerative medicine for treatment of diseased cells, and to replace damaged cells. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) contains hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs, blood forming) and progenitor stem cells that can be used as an alternative source for bone marrow transplantation. UCB stem cells are being used to treat over 80 different diseases, particularly blood disorders.
