Rohingya People

The Rohingya people are a predominantly Sunni Muslim ethnic minority from Rakhine state in Myanmar (formerly Burma). The population of Rohingya numbers around 2 million, of which fewer than 1 million reside in Myanmar. The majority now reside in the diaspora in neighbouring Bangladesh, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Both Rakhine and Myanmar are Buddhist majority states, and ethnic and religious tensions have been an ongoing concern, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya over the last century and what have been described as crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and a (slow-burning) genocide.
