In contemporary society, various forms of media have become a primary source for encountering religion. This situation is interrelated with technological developments that enhance access to conventional mass media, digital media, and the social changes that affect the position of religious communities in society and individual lives. Thus, studies of how religion is presented in various forms of media, and how media are used to express and practice religion, is an important area of study for the sociology of religion. This entry presents three approaches to studying the role of religion in contemporary society through analyzing media in various forms: religion in the media, religion as media, and mediatization of religion.
