Houtart, François

François Houtart (1925–2017) was a Belgian sociologist and a Catholic priest. His work was focused on the understanding of religion as part of social and historical structures marked by inequitable social relations. He also contributed to the critical sociological appraisal of global capitalism and especially to the study of the alter-globalist movements.

As a professor at the Catholic University of Louvain (1958–1990), he was a mentor of many sociologists of religion. He was the author of 50 books and countless articles and coordinator of numerous journal issues. He received honorary doctorates from the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, 1966) and the University of Havana (Cuba, 2008).
