Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) is known as the ‘Party of Freedom’. Founded in Jerusalem in 1953 as a protest moment, its aims are to inspire Muslims to come together in pursuit of the collective goal of establishing a caliphate, permitting the global community of Muslims—the ‘ummah’—to protect their interests by working together in the pursuit of the greater good. Crucially, it aims to challenge the working of society in a way that is engaged, participatory, and non-violent. Sheikh Mohammed Taqiuddin an-Nabhani, the individual who established this group, was critical of capitalism but also liberalism.
