Hadden, Jeffrey K.

Jeffrey K. Hadden (1937–2003) earned his BA degree in psychology in 1959 and his MA in sociology the following year from the University of Kansas. Just 3 years later, he was awarded a PhD in sociology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he was trained in demography and ecology. Hadden then accepted a postdoctoral appointment to work on a Danforth Foundation–funded project examining the role of clergy in the civil rights movement. This project led to his widely acclaimed 1969 book The Gathering Storm in the Churches, which chronicled the social and political diversity among denominations and the unrest in many churches over the clergy’s involvement in social action activities.
