The Gülen Movement (GM) is a Turkish transnational education-based Muslim missionary movement named after its eponymous leader Fethullah Gülen (1941– ), which is inspired by the works of the Kurdish religious scholar Said Nursi (1876–1960). Indeed, the GM is one of more than a dozen ‘neo-Nur’ movements that formed following Said Nursi’s death in 1960 and is based on his central tenet that there is no opposition between religion and science. Nursi was of the view that science simply uncovers the signs of God and that the better one’s understanding of the natural world, the closer to God one can become.
