Deviance

Deviance is any activity or condition inconsistent with enforced social expectations. It can be an elusive concept; it refers to a wide variety of behavior depending on the social location and time period. These can be theft, corruption, pollution, being too fat or thin, and being rude or late. It can also be about drug consumption, prostitution, and abortion, which can be viewed quite differently depending on which religion one belongs to. Even if seen as deviant in contemporary liberal societies, some religious groups have supported the use of some drugs for rituals and to practices of sacred prostitution. Even if legal in certain geographical locations, other religious groups have strongly expressed their opposition to abortion, trying to criminalize it, thus making it deviant.
