UFO Cults

A UFO cult is an organized religious group that includes the concept of extra-terrestrials as a fundamental component of its theology.

Although extra-terrestrials are referenced in Oahspe (1882), a 900-page work written while in a trance state by New York dentist John Newbrough, and in Guy Ballard’s I AM movement of the 1930s, they were minor elements within wider cosmologies. Most scholars trace the origins of religious groups centered on the concept of alien beings to the contactees of the 1950s.

The contactee movement was largely centered in Southern California. And while its founder, George Adamski, did not form a religious group around himself, the key elements of its narrative originate with him.
