The term cultural competence describes the degree to which an individual shares with others an understanding of his or her own culture. Cultural competence in this sense rests on a cognitive definition of culture: that which one needs to know to function adequately in a given community. Methodological developments since the 1980s have led to the precise operationalization of the concept of cultural competence, based on cultural consensus analysis. This entry first explains the process of cultural consensus analysis and then discusses developments since the introduction of the model to further the understanding of cultural competence and cultural consensus.
