Umbrella Trials Design
The umbrella trials design (UTD) is a type of clinical trial design aiming to test a medication(s) in human participants with the same type of disease but with different molecular biology. UTD is a research plan in which the impact of multiple novel therapies matched to different targets within one disease is investigated simultaneously in parallel substudies or cohorts in one large clinical trial. In contrast to traditional clinical trial designs, in which a single experimental therapy is evaluated in one clinical trial, umbrella trials consist of several arms or subtrials testing different agents and allow adding new arms over time.
