Workplace and Gender: Overview

Men’s and women’s participation in the workplace varies in quality and quantity across the globe. This overview will cover some of the factors influencing women’s and men’s work life and the current status of women and men in the workplace. Although this overview focuses on gender, workers’ experiences are affected by the “intersections” of a wide number of variables related to group membership and by country of residence, culture, power, and politics across their life span. Although “men” and “women” are compared in this overview, because those are the categories currently used in data collection, current thinking in psychological research acknowledges that this is an artificial dichotomy and that sex and gender identity cannot be reduced to this simple dichotomy.
