Transgender People

Transgender is a single term that refers to a characterization of a person at two different time points in their development: (1) a description of the gender category to which they were assigned at birth based on the appearance of external genitalia and (2) a description of the current gender identity that the person has self-assigned (also called gender self-categorization). Because trans- is the Latin prefix for “to move across or beyond,” a transgender person can be described as having a label for the self-assigned identity that is different from the category label assigned at birth.
