Take Back the Night

Take Back the Night (TBTN) rallies are candlelight marches to show support for survivors of sexual assault. The purpose of TBTN events is to eliminate sexual violence of all kinds. Thousands of colleges and universities, rape crisis centers, women’s centers, and human service organizations sponsor annual TBTN events that are typically held on the last Thursday in April. As much of the TBTN advocacy is designed to raise peer awareness, it is particularly relevant for this encyclopedia. As such, what follows is a delineation of the development of TBTN, a discussion of the formal and informal opportunities to become involved in TBTN advocacy efforts, and a description of some of the controversies and resources that have grown from TBTN.
