Superwoman Complex

The intersection of race and gender provides Black women with a unique experience in society. Black women contend with racism, sexism, and gendered racism due to their racial and gender identity. The existence of gendered racism highlights the need to utilize an intersectional perspective in order to understand the experiences of Black women. Gendered racism can be seen in stereotypes of Black women perpetuated throughout media portrayals and popular culture. The experiences of Black women in the United States must be considered in light of the historical factors that have shaped reality for this population.
