Physical Assault, Transgender Survivors of

Regarding physical assault of transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, researchers have debated the prevalence rates of physical assault, particularly in assessing whether physical assaults are related to the victim’s transgender and gender nonconforming identity. Most crime victimization statistics are collected by law enforcement or agencies funded by the federal government, who have not given victims the option to state their gender identity (if they identify as transgender) or gender history (if they were assigned a sex at birth that is different from their gender identity). That makes it impossible to know how many people reporting having been physically assaulted are transgender or gender nonbinary.
