Multiracial People and Transgender Identity

Individuals who identify as multiracial and transgender or other gender nonconforming may experience both challenges and opportunities in navigating racial and gender identity development within cultures and societies that prefer simple social categorization. While race and gender are distinct social constructs, multiracial people who identify as transgender (throughout this entry, the term transgender is used to include individuals who identify as gender nonconforming) may experience discomfort and tension regarding both their racial and gender identity development processes, especially in response to confusion, denial, and rejection from others. However, intersections of racial and gender identities may also serve as opportunities for resilience and liberation as multiracial transgender individuals develop unique coping strategies, strengths, and social support systems.
