Marriage
Marriage is the joining of two people through legal, social, or religious ceremonies. The marital relationship has a long-standing tradition in society and has been found in human cultures since the beginning of time. During the 2000s, legal conceptualizations of marriage expanded to include same-sex couples. Same-sex marriage is legal in many countries, and in those where it is not legal, legislation is often in place to provide the same rights and benefits to same-sex partners that opposite-sex partners have. Apart from the legal benefits conferred by marriage, marriage often has financial benefits due to shared resources as well as psychological and physical health benefits. Gender differences exist in many of these benefits, however.
