Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Experiences of Aging

In the United States, it is estimated that there are between 1.75 and 4 million lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB), and transgendered individuals over the age of 60 years. Around the globe, the older adult population, inclusive of all sexual orientations and gender identities, is growing and is marked by incredible diversity. There are many factors that encompass one’s personal identity, and these elements intersect and include age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, national origin, culture, religion, language, ability, socioeconomic status, as well as unique life experiences. Hence, there is no homogeneous LGB older adult population or community. Rather, LGB older adults reflect the broad tapestry of diversity observed in all aged populations. This entry focuses on the experiences of aging for LGB older adults.
