Glucocorticosteroids (Sport)

Glucocorticosteroids are steroid hormones that prevent inflammation. These hormones are produced naturally in the human body within the adrenal glands, which are located inside of the brain. The cortex manufactures these hormones in response to stress. Glucocorticosteroids also play a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat, and protein, as well as numerous other bodily functions. As these hormones are used to inhibit inflammation, glucocorticosteroids are used to manage inflammatory diseases such as asthma and arthritis. Sports physicians have also used these hormones to help athletes recover from injuries. However, athletes have begun to increasingly use these hormones for ergogenic purposes.
