Elderly People

Elderly people comprise the older adult population and are generally defined in Western culture and medicine as people age 65 and older. The elderly population is rapidly growing in the United States while other age groups are decreasing in proportion. Elderly people are often affected by chronic health conditions and are high consumers of health care services and medications. Changes occur as people age that can affect proper medication use in the elderly population. Pharmacists can play an important role in optimizing use of medications in the growing elderly population.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau report on population estimates and projections, the number of elderly people in the United States is projected to double between 2010 and 2050 from 40.2 million to 88.5 million. ...
