Diuretics and Masking Agents (Sport)

The use of chemical substances to enhance sports performance evolved as a consequence of growing financial incentives tied to athletic performance and the arduous nature of competitive events. In order to restrain fatigue, or the perception thereof, athletes turned to amphetamines and other stimulants to effectively compete in sports such as long-distance cycling, running, and open-water swimming. After realizing that these agents threatened the health of athletes, government and sport organizations began to restrict their use. With margins of victory narrowing and regulations tightening, some athletes began to use agents that would conceal their violations.
