Astellas Pharma is a pharmaceutical corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with approximately 17,000 employees. As of 2012, it is the second largest pharmaceutical corporation in Japan and the 18th in the world in terms of global sales. Astella Pharma’s five focus areas are urology, immunology and infectious diseases, oncology, neuroscience, and diabetes complications as well as kidney diseases. Within urology, Astellas Pharma considers itself to be a Global Category Leader (GCL). The corporation’s drugs Vesicare and Mirabegron belong within the urological segment and sold globally for approximately ¥100 billion (about US $1.21 billion) in fiscal year (FY) 2011 (April 2011–March 2012) and ¥117 billion in FY2012 (April 2012–March 2013).
