Veterans Administration (U.S.): Prescription Drug Benefits

The Veterans Administration is a shortened name for the Veterans Health Administration, also known as the VHA, which is the largest arm of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, often known simply as the VA. The VHA, which is a totally distinct organization from the Department of Defense Military Health System, provides medical care for all veterans who have met certain requirements (serving for a certain amount of time). Originally, pensions and free medical care served as incentives to convince young people to enlist in the United States military, but over time the services that the VA provides have come to be seen as a civic duty and a way of repaying those who have served the United States.
