University of Oxford

The University of Oxford, located in Oxford, England, is the oldest institution of higher learning in the English-speaking world. While the exact date of its establishment remains unknown, it is documented that some classes were being taught there as early as 1096. The official founding date has been estimated to be 1167. By the late 12th century, Oxford had begun to attract scholars from other countries. The first of the 38 colleges that comprise the university system was established during the medieval period. Long recognized as a force in humanistic studies, Oxford began adding a new emphasis on natural and applied science in the 20th century.
