State-Sponsored Sports Doping Programs

Sporting events worldwide have often been marred by cases of doping. A number of countries have been accused of practicing state-sponsored doping in order to establish their supremacy in international sporting events in quick time. Some of these countries include East Germany, China, and the Soviet Union. Here, China and East Germany will be used to showcase the practice and problems of state-sponsored doping programs.

There are many reports of widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) by Chinese athletes. For instance, an August 2008 article in Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster, cited evidence that China is a center for the production and distribution of PEDs and that Chinese physicians administered stem cell therapies to athletes.
