The pharmaceutical industry in Russia is relatively small given the size of the global market, but it has seen a steady growth due to recent governmental initiatives. In 2008, the Russian government began making efforts to update its national health care system. These efforts involve ongoing significant reforms of their pharmaceutical industry. In 2010, Russia launched the “Pharma 2020 Strategy,” which established high goals in an attempt to address the nation’s low life expectancy rates. Under this plan, the Russian government intends to assist local pharmaceutical companies finance research and development (R&D) efforts in hopes of increasing production of innovative pharmaceuticals and to develop more new companies.
