Serious gaming refers to the use of digital games to support learning in both formal and informal learning contexts. It encompasses the use of serious games—games designed specifically for educational purposes—and the use or adaptation of commercial games originally designed for purely leisure time activities. Games may be played using a variety of technologies and include video and console games, mobile phone games, and games for the Xbox, Wii, and so on. Serious gaming may also encompass the use of virtual worlds as locations in which learning takes place.
