Open Educational Resources

The term open educational resources (OERs) refers to content available online that is intentionally designed to support teaching and learning. A fundamental assumption is that these resources are freely available and unfettered by conventional copyright restrictions. In this way, they can be accessed and used by anyone; furthermore, they can be remixed, adapted, and distributed to other learning contexts. Fueled in part by the ubiquity of Internet tools and infrastructure, the amount, scope, and variety of OERs continue to increase rapidly. This great abundance of OERs has the potential to greatly enhance—and indeed transform—out-of-school learning: They can significantly extend access to educational resources, offer different and appealing learning experiences, and promote an atmosphere of reuse and sharing among members of out-of-school learning communities.
