Online Safety
As the number of Internet users continues to rise at a global level, online safety has become a widespread concern. Online safety refers to precautions individuals should take when accessing information online to ensure that personal information, electronic devices, and the self are protected from Internet and computer crime. Online safety is used interchangeably with terms such as Internet safety, cybersafety, Internet security, online security, and cybersecurity. This entry offers a general overview of online safety and then discusses key online safety issues and public policy and regulatory approaches to these issues.
