Mediated discourse analysis is a research approach that analyzes discourse through a focus on social actions rather than language use. It is based on mediated discourse theory, a composite of related fields, including sociolinguistics, critical discourse analysis, New Literacy Studies, and social practice theory, that provides a set of heuristics for investigating the development and enactment of social practices within and across contexts of learning. Mediated discourse analysis is particularly useful for investigating social practices brought along by people as they travel across contexts, including learning opportunities within and outside school.
