Knowledge building represents a theory-driven effort to reconstruct education as a knowledge-creating enterprise. Education is thus seen not merely as preparation for life and work in a 21st-century knowledge-based society but as actual participation in the life of such a society. This means that learners are not merely enacting some of the practices of adult knowledge creation (as is common in many modern approaches) but are pursuing the same kinds of goals. They are not only developing personal knowledge and skills but also, like creative producers in all fields, creating communicable knowledge of value to their community.
