Cosplay is the portrayal of a character or object from a media property such as a Japanese anime or a video game through costuming and performance. Fans of a franchise often make the costumes themselves and wear them to special events such as fan conventions, which take place all over the world. Cosplayers are hobbyists who do this work almost entirely outside formal contexts. In the process, however, they learn many skills related to craft, construction, art, aesthetics, math, technology, and critical thinking about texts, while also refining their own identities. Making a cosplay that adheres to the cosplay community’s criteria of quality is often a highly complex affair.
