Blogs and Blogging

Blogging has resulted in the creation of rich spaces for learning, constructed in many contexts by a mixture of people of various ages and backgrounds for a wide range of purposes. Common across all of these people and purposes is the act of publishing in public spheres that draws on unique capabilities of online spaces to develop and participate in particular communities. This entry (a) describes what blogging is and how scholars have come to understand it; (b) examines the theories on and research about blogging as a form of out-of-school learning, specifically highlighting how blogging has introduced uncommon understandings of knowledge—whose it is and where it lives—as well as unique ways of relating to others; and (c) provides examples of blogging in practice.
